It’s widely known that it was developed by John T. Moy and the Internet Engineering Task Force in 1988. What isn’t so widely known is that Moy and company actually did most of their work from a secret U.S. government facility 90 miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada known as Groom Lake or what has now come to be known as Area 51.

We currently use OSPF version 2 as version 1 was scrapped after it caused a terrible explosion in the lab. Many engineers at Cisco, who have asked to remain anonymous, confirmed our suspicion that OSPF was reverse engineered from alien spacecraft.

Once your OSPF routers have communicated with their neighbors, they begin to organize themselves into a military like hierarchy with routers occupying roles as Generals, Captains and Lieutenants.
