4 évvel ezelőtt adták ki a 12.4-es IOS-t, és most itt a 15.0. Számos új szolgáltatással, és buggal rendelkezik. A számozást tekintve a 13 szerencsétlen szám, a 14 pedig szerencsétlen szám Ázsiában, ezért hát 15.0 lett.

A 15.0 egy új fejlesztési modellt követ, ahol a karbantartás verziók (M címkézésű) és a T verziók együtt lesznek kiadva.

Az új IOS néhány új hardware támogatása mellett, egyes régebbi modelleket már nem támogatja (2600XM, 3600, 3700 routerek). A támogatott hardware-ek, és a memória szükségletekről itt olvashatunk.

Sajnos az IOS is rendelkezik bugokkal (ez teszi még élvezetesebbé a hálózatos szakmát). Ezekről itt olvashatunk, néhányat pedig kigyűjtöttem:

•CSCso97304
Symptoms: Configuring and unconfiguring hierarchical QoS may cause memory leak on a Cisco router.
Conditions: This symptom occurs on a Cisco router that is running Cisco IOS Release 12.4(15)T4.
Workaround: There is no workaround.

•CSCsu64365
Symptoms: The system may experience repeated crash due to I/O memory corruption showing error messages like:
%SYS-6-BLKINFO: Corrupted next pointer blk
Conditions: The corruption is caused by voice packets encapsulated by GRE/IPSEC (other encapsulations which add to the size of the packet). The router must have voice packets routed through GRE or IPSEC tunnel and if a simultaneous Fax tone is sent, the router will crash.
Workaround: Move the GRE tunnel from the CME where ever possible.

•CSCsx81957
Symptoms: Router crashes due to memory corruption in TPLUS process.
Conditions: Occurs during normal operations.
Workaround: There is no workaround.

•CSCsz38342
Symptoms: FTP traffic is not policy routed.
Conditions: Above symptom is seen on Cisco routers configured for local PBR with set IP next-hop clause.
Workaround: Add a static route to the next-hop network.

•CSCsz89093
Symptom: Cisco 2800 router can drop multicast packets.
Conditions: Stream sources are connected to NM-16ESW switch module.
Workaround: Disable IGMP snooping.

Van sok bug, de vannak új featurek is, például:

- Full BFD support, including static routes, BFD-in-VRF and BFD-over-Frame Relay (next step: test it on a 2800-series router);
- DHCP authentication;
- DMVPN tunnel health monitoring;
- EEM 3.1 (whatever that is, the EEM documentation hasn’t been updated yet);
- Interaction between IS-IS and LDP;
- BGP local convergence in MPLS VPN networks (the feature has already been available in 12.2 SRC, now it’s available on more platforms);
- OSPF graceful shutdown and OSPF TTL security check features are available on more platforms;
- Intra-zone traffic inspection in zone-based firewall.
